Ford Model T The Ford Model T, Fun Facts and Figures....

The venerable Ford Model T is often referred to as "The car that changed the world", was produced from 1908 until 1927. Henry Ford's Model T came to be known as the "Tin Lizzie" and the "Fliver." The Model T is probably best associated with the modern "assembly line" production technique. A little known fact though is that Ford didn't impliment this "assembly line" approach until the 1914 production year. This production technique was so successful that at the end of the 1914 production year, Ford had built more cars than all of the other manufacturers combined.

This "mass production" and cost cutting methods set in place by Henry Ford, caused the price of a new Model T Ford to drop from $800 to about $300 in the early 1920's. This dramatic decrease in the selling price was made possible do to Henry Ford's "Waste not, Want not" theories. Wooden shipping crates that brought assembly parts to the factory were made to specs that allowed the wood to be used in production of the Model T body parts, small bits of wood scraps were turned into charcoal, and sold by the KingsFORD Charcoal Company.

The Model T Ford sported a 20 horse power 4 cylinder engine, which pushed Henry's car down the road at a top speed of about 45 mph. The 10 gallon gas tank was located directly under the driver's seat. Regular "non-safety" plate glass windows was used in all of the Model T Fords. The Model T became the first "world car" with production set up in Canada, England, Germany, France, Spain, Brazil, Argentena, Denmark, Norway, and Japan. In the end the Volkswagen Beetle was the only car that ever outsold the Model T Ford.

Before the 1926 Model T production was started, Henry Ford had determined that there were some serious changes that needed to be made. Many of his competitors had been creeping up on him, by offering customers larger engines, 3 speed transmissions, and creature comfort items, such as windshield wipers and light dimmer switches.

The 1926 Ford Model T was introduced as a "New Improved" Model T. They were offered in 18 different body styles and chasis designs. Additionally, new color paint schemes were now made available. Wooden "artillary wheels" were replaced with steel wire wheels. New fenders, running boards, and hoods dramaticaly changed the appearance of the "New Improved" Ford Model T for 1926.

The Touring Car actually now was offered with an opening door on the driver's side. Some of "options" offerred included front and rear bumpers, a nickel plated radiator shell, and a vacuum operated windshield wiper. But even with all of the changes, the Model T Ford would only have one more year of production, before being replaced by the Model A in 1928.
